This review is from: Nutribiotic Gse Liquid Concentrate, 4 Fluid Ounce (Health and Beauty)
I purchased this product earlier in the year from Whole Foods Market, I believe. I've been using the product intermittently for probably over 25 years, manly if I have gastrointestinal distress, diarrhea, or if I believe I may have eaten some tainted food, and it usually resolves the problem with one or two doses. However, this bottle which expires in 12/17, didn't seem to do much. The label does not have the word "organic" on it as the previous bottle did, but it does say CITRICIDAL after Grapefruit Seed Extract in the ingredient list. However for some reason it didn't seem to be as effective for me For the use mentioned above. Nutribiotic verified that the bottle I have does contain CITRICIDAL, so I'm not sure why it didn't seem as effective.
Nutrbiotic has replaced Citricidal brand GSE with that from another supplier in 2 & 4ounce bottles, starting about a year ago. The new GSE is less bitter, less yellow, and doesn't foam. Some think it's less effective.
This change is a de facto bait and switch from Nutribiotic, because traditionally the product in this shape of bottle has contained CITRICIDAL, yet they still call it The Original GSE on the new labels, but it's not. One must buy a 1 oz. round bottle, Maximum GSE, to get actual CITRICIDAL. Previously the 2 and 4 ounce bottles had it, but in a lower concentration. (See UPDATE below.).
As far as the safety of CITRICIDAL, or GSE in general, it seems safe, but I myself would not use it regularly--just for specific occurrences, mentioned earlier; as far as the new version of GSE--it would be interesting to have it tested for antibacterial and antimicrobial effectiveness compared to the product with CITRICIDAL.
UPDATE:
I spoke to a customer service rep at Nutribiotic and she explained the reason that they switched from CITRICIDAL to another GSE supplier. Because of newer FDA regulations, they require from the supplier certain safety data and paperwork regarding internal use, which CITRICIDAL would not provide. Nutribiotic claims they had previously always tested the name-brand GSE for the presence of (the disputed) similar-structure synthetic preservatives through independent labs that had the properly sensitive equipment to avoid false-positives, and the synthetic preservatives (benzalkonium chloride, triclosan, and methylparaben) were never found, and that their chemical analysis shows that the replacement GSE is virtually the same chemically as CITRICIDAL; I told her I found the new GSE to be ineffective and asked if they tested it's antimicrobial properties. She said that they haven't, but even if they did they couldn't talk about it because of FDA regulations. I told her that they have made a decision to perhaps create a number of dissatisfied customers, but maybe they have no choice. She said the Maximum GSE will be available for those who want CITRICIDAL, although it has to be labeled Not For Internal Use. As for the CITRICIDAL GSE Professional version, 1 oz. (which I just I ordered), when current stock runs out it will also be converted to the non-name-brand GSE, but as that has not yet happened, the one I ordered should be the original product. In the future only the Maximum GSE will have CITRICIDAL GSE.
